The “11 Piki no Neko” (Eleven Cats) series of books that depict tales of amusing adventures led by a tabby cat named Toraneko Taisho. Since they were first published in 1967, approximately 4.3 million copies of the six books have sold, making it a beloved series by people of all ages. Their author, Noboru Baba, was born in Sannohe Town in 1927. He won the Bungeishunjū Manga Award in 1973 for his book “11 Piki no Neko to Ahodori,” and was also awarded the Erba Prize at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 1985 for his emaki picture book “11 Piki no Neko to Marathon Taikai.” Mr. Baba later went on to win the Minister of Education, Science and Technology Award at the 22nd Japan Cartoonists Association Award in 1993, and the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1995. He became an honorary citizen of Sannohe Town in 1999.
To commemorate these stellar deeds, Sannohe is now making efforts to develop the town with influences from 11 Piki no Neko. A walk through the town reveals many lovable cats all over the place.
